South Carolina

So I spent last week just outside Beaufort, S.C. Every other year a couple of my frat brothers and I pick a place and go vacation for the week. We bring girlfriends, significant others and wives. So we rented a house on St. Helena Island and camped out for the week. Here are the highlights:

Eating shrimp at least once every day.

Each person getting a shirt with a pirate logo on the front and a nickname on the back. We were the pirates of the Pirates of the Foo Foo Drinks and my nickname was Salty Dog.

Having to buy a second round of more powerful fireworks because the neighbors put our first round to shame.

A day trip to Savannah and eating at Lady and Son’s

A day trip to Charleston strolling around the city and eating at High Cotton. The pork tenderloin was the size of a softball and mighty delicious.

Forties, fighter jets and Talladega Nights at the drive-in. What could be more American than watching a racing movie at the drive-in drinking forties while fighter jets fly overhead. Oh, and we had cigars. The jets did make it hard to hear the movie.

Hanging out at the beach and not getting stung by jelly fish when everyone else does.

Kayaking on the flat water.

Relaxing in the pool at the house.

Lots of ice cream.

Relaxation.

Thank goodness for the power of the internet - I had no idea what a "forty" was (in retrospect this is pretty shocking) until I googled it and found this site - http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=857492

We called them "bumpers" back in the day...
